Stikwood & bathrooms

Wood is hygroscopic. So wherever there is a change in relative humidity (RH) the wood will change in moisture content (MC). When this happens, the wood will either expand (RH and MC go up) or contract (RH and MC go down). Changes in MC lag changes in RH. It typically takes 48 to 72 hours for Stikwood to reach what is called equilibrium moisture content (EMC). That is the MC where the material is neither gaining or losing moisture at a given RH. So we are interested in the average RH over this period.

That being said Stikwood performs well in average relative humidity between 30% and 65% at typical room temperatures. In properly functioning residential bathrooms you will see RH that is higher than this for short periods. This will bump the average RH up a few points but not significantly over the EMC lag time. So if the bathroom RH is normalizing after wet events like showers then there should be no issues using Stikwood. On the other hand if the bathroom has a moisture issue that prevents the RH from normalizing after showers etc. then it is not recommended that stikwood be installed. This type of issue is usually related to poor ventilation and or water leaks that soak into the floors and walls.

When installing stikwood into areas with rapid RH fluctuations like bathrooms there are two moisture considerations to take into account.

First is the average relative humidity of the space it is installed in. This needs to be between 30% and 65%. The product needs to acclimate (store) in these conditions for at least 72 hours prior to installation.

Second is the moisture content of the surface stikwood is being attached to. Although the adhesive is very moisture resistant once adhered (we have weathered wood stikwood installed on our outdoor patio) it must be installed in dry conditions. The surface you are installing to must be dry. That is have a moisture content less than 8%. To put that into perspective freshly painted drywall can have a MC of 20% and take a few weeks to get below 8% depending on conditions.

All this may seem complicated but applies to the installation of any wood or fiber product. We have many successful stikwood installs as well as a few failures due to impossible site conditions. If in doubt you may want to test a small area with the material to see how it will react to the your real world conditions.

We wanted more of a cottage feel to the home while not having to do any major projects that took a lot of time. We were looking to achieve a cool look that would get a lot of “wow”s, while not having to get too messy ourselves in the process (Truth be told- DIY people we are not). While researching ideas we found Stikwood and loved the look and the idea that anyone can do it. We ordered samples of the reclaimed weathered wood white, and reclaimed weathered wood gray since they both had a beachy cottage feel to them, and decided on the gray for our living room. Once the Stikwood arrived it looked a little too easy to be true- I figured no way would this stick to the wall and look clean and lay flat …well I was completely wrong! My husband actually got to work on it one evening himself and did the entire thing in no time. I walked down the stairs the next morning and was simply amazed- it looks phenomenal! The adhesive is brilliant- it lays flat as can be, and the look of it is just what we wanted - a beachy cottage look. Everyone that has seen it raves about the look of it and when they hear how easy it is they are always intrigued. My parents are ordering some for their hallway in Michigan after seeing it, and my brother and sister are ordering some for their bedroom as well. My husband said it was so simple anyone could do it, and he is right, I actually covered the top of a busted up IKEA table myself with some of the leftover pieces. We are beyond thrilled with Stikwood and are going to do our bedroom with the white weathered wood because we love it so much! Stikwood rocks our world!”

The world’s first peel and stick solid wall...

Stikwood: The New Peel and Stick Wood Paneling

The world’s first peel and stick solid wall planking is certainly easier to install than regular wood paneling.

Almost everyone has a wall that doesn’t look right, or a table, or the back of a kitchen island. Maybe it’s an empty bedroom wall that makes the room look cold. Maybe it’s a drab beige office wall. Maybe it’s an old IKEA table that has seen better days. Perhaps you’ve been looking for a way to bring natural, harmonizing elements into your space, but you just haven’t figured it out.

Reclaimed weathered wood by Stikwood via Stickwood.com.

<ins><ins id="aswift_1_anchor"></ins></ins>

I just discovered Stikwood, and I think it is a brilliant solution to all of the above situations. With Stikwood, any room can look like it has artisanal bespoke reclaimed wood, or smooth bamboo, walls built by an earnest San Francisco carpenter. Don’t have a remodeled condo in the Mission? Ha ha, neither do I. But with the help of Stikwood, our own apartments and condos can have that look.

Stikwood is, in plain language, 1/8 inch thick wooden planks that can be affixed to a clean, sanded surface with adhesive strips that are factory-mounted on their flip sides. While not a total beginner’s project (the planks need to be cut down to size with a power saw), “the world’s first peel and stick solid wall planking” is certainly easier to install than regular wood paneling.

Wood paneling by Stikwood via Stikwood.com.Like bead board wallpaper, Stikwood is able to create the illusion of custom trim woodwork, for a fraction of the price and time. Sourced and manufactured in the USA, it’s a pretty green product. The company claims that Stickwood products are VOC free, which is great for people with sensitivities to scents, which can be triggered byremodelers using noxious adhesives and paints.

The photos of customers’ projects on Stikwood’s Tumblr are pretty inspiring. One customer used Stikwood to cover the back side of a kitchen island. Another totally changed the look of a living room by covering a wall with it. Another customer framed a fireplace with it (it’s flammable like all wood; it appears that the fireplace is not in use).

Have you tried Stikwood? I’m excited to try it myself. With so many possible DIY applications and a fairly reasonable price, Stikwood is an attractive new material to work with.
